What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?
A Medicare Advantage Plan, also known as Part C, combines benefits under Part A and Part B and possibly Part D as well. When you enroll in this type of plan, you are still on Medicare, but all of your benefits will be provided by the company you choose for your MA plan. These plans, like Prescription Drug Plans are offered by private insurance companies that have a contract with Medicare. There are different types of Medicare Advantage Plans, such as Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Preferred Provider (PPO) plans, and Special Needs Plans (SNPs).1 Plan types and availability vary county by county (based on where you live). You must have both Part A and Part B, and live in the plans service area to enroll. Any premium for this plan will be in addition to your Part B premium. Unlike Original Medicare, except for emergencies, you must get all of your medical services from providers contracted with your plan.
